Gah!! I was if-y about going... Lord of the Rings as a musical? But a friend got a discount so I eventually convinced myself to get a ticket as well...
Before any of it had started, there were hobbits all over the place... Some on the stage trying to catch "fireflies" with nets taller than themselves, some on the balcony just lounging around...
All in all, it was pretty good. Though I have to say, the story was a bit mangled (there were times during the latter second half where I'd just be sitting there thinking "huh?") but the MUSIC absolutely made the whole thing worth it.
Truthfully, in the movies, I absolutely hated Sam. Every time Sam and Frodo came out in the movies, I'd skip. But Sam was my favorite character in the musical and the Sam, Frodo and Gollum parts were absolutely the best. Especially that one song about talking about heros and that sort of thing... That has to be THE best part of the whole thing. I damn my memory for not remembering what it went like, but I'd consider going again, if just to hear that song.
I also loved the fact that nearly all the songs were based on those found in the books. The songs are a big part in the book, teaching a bit of history, explaining things, etc. And everything fit in so perfectly...
The special effects were marvelous as well. As were the costumes. The Nazgul... gosh... they were just...
I have to say though, there were a couple things that I either hated or annoyed me. Galadriel looked... weird... I don't think there's much else that could express what I felt when I saw Galadriel... Though she did sing great and everything else was done wonderfully as well... Eowyn? They should have just left her out... I swear, they told her story in 1 minute. No, really. 1 minute. I could never tell Eomer and Theoden apart... There was this mention about ent-wives and Tom Bombadill that was absolutely useless... Gandalf and Saruman annoyed me quite a bit... as much as Sam did in the movies. And especially in the end where Saruman shows up in black pants and a black jacket? That was... yeah... The Scouring of the Shire... I don't know... not as useless as Eowyn's bit and they had to show what happened to Saruman as well, but meh...
Two things that surprisingly DIDN'T annoy me when they probably should have were Arwen popping up now and then (but she just sang a bit and that was it...) and using Bill Ferny (I think it was) was Grima Wormtongue as well. I don't know what it was... it should have annoyed me more than it did...
Well, altogether, for a LotR fanatic (I took a course on it... I actually paid money to study it...) I think it was pretty good, but really, as my friends said before I saw the thing, you musn't compare it to the movies... This thing was all of the books in 3.5 hours... The movies were 12 hours altogether... But if the musical comes around, GO SEE IT!!!
